Blog Everyday in May Challenge
Day 6: If you couldn’t answer with your job, how would you answer this question: what do you do?
This blog isn’t a statement about waiters or waitresses at a restaurant. It is, however, having to do with another quote I love:
If you wait for inspiration to write, you’re a waiter, not a writer.
The gist: I write and write and sometimes I feel no inspiration at all. Sometimes the story doesn’t come together. There are days when I wonder what the hell I’m doing. But I refuse to be a waiter. Writers do something so simple… something almost everyone can do. We put one word after another, one sentence after another, one paragraph after another, until something somewhat cohesive is created.
Sometimes it takes a lot out of me to sit down and write fiction. I get emotionally invested in my characters and stories. They start to take on a life of their own. I’ve found myself thinking, “{Insert character’s name}, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!”
Sure I wrote it. But they did it. So there.
I’d like to point out here, that this blog prompt is probably written assuming that a person wouldn’t want to be defined by their job. Because let’s face it: most people are blogging to get away from the reality of their work day. Most people read books and write stories and run marathons to forget the 9-5 and live their lives.
But along with being a writer, I am a farmer. I’d say that writing used to be my Plan A…. but farming has taken hold of that number one spot.
I love what I do. I feel like it defines me because it goes along with everything I believe in and want to accomplish in life. I’ll be okay if I don’t ever actually publish anything. I don’t know if I’ll feel quite the same about never having my own version of a homestead. I love hard work. I would rather eat what I grew and share it with the world.
Both dreams include creating something through dedication and hard work and sharing it with others. I love this :)
If you define yourself by “what you do” at work… that’s okay.
If you don’t, that’s also okay.
We’re all just trying to figure it out.
Let’s all just agree to not be waiters. Deal? What’s your dream? Your dream job… dream life??
Make it happen.
Okay, that’s enough small lines, rather than paragraphs on here.
Love,
Lou
